Murray, NEB- On Nov. 17, Allison Welch won the Ann Mactier School Board Member of the Year Award at the State School Board Conference. She was recognized for her policy leadership and contributions to curriculum and instruction in Nebraska Public Schools.
The Ann Mactier School Board Member of the Year Award is dedicated to Ann Mactier, who started the Phoenix Academy. It provides individualized support and attention to students who need additional learning assistance. The Phoenix Academy often incorporates nature into its education methods.
Welch has been passionate about positively changing and growing Conestoga since her children were in elementary school. As a member of the PTO, she helped raise $40,000 to create Cougar Hollow, the outdoor classroom at the elementary school. “My favorite part of being a school board member is advocating for students and staff,” shared Welch. She added that the culture at Conestoga is positive and encouraging. While a current challenge is adding facilities to match the growth and excellence of the staff and students, Welch believes that many good things are happening at Conestoga and the board will work toward adding on facilities.
Welch’s focus as head of the Conestoga School Board is to help all students and staff members while they are in our buildings. She hopes that if she keeps the students at the head of her decisions, she will provide the greatest good. Congratulations to Allison Welch. She has been and will continue to be a vital member of the Conestoga community.
On Nov. 16, our student board member, John McConnell, represented Conestoga at the State Education Conference in downtown Omaha. He was among the six students selected to share their perspectives on issues that are important to future leaders during the Student Voices session. He learned what topics are being focused on by board members in Nebraska right now and was able to start thinking about the student perspective on them. There was also time for students to speak on topics prevalent to high schoolers, such as mental health. “I’m privileged that I had the opportunity to represent students and speak to their perspective on the school system.”
