Murray, NEB- Some might say this day at school was “fire”. On Feb. 28, Conestoga experienced a school fire and a road fire on the same day. Both of the fires caused a few challenges throughout the school day.
During sixth period, all students and staff members had to evacuate the building due to the dishwasher catching on fire. Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Lisa Bergmeyer states, “Due to the dishwasher incident students ended up missing about 30 minutes of class time.” She said, “However, all students and staff did a great job of evacuating and then returning back to their rooms to resume the day.”
Later that day, there was a brush fire on Highway 1 between the high school and elementary school. This impacted bus and student transportation for both schools. To reduce traffic on the gravel roads, students who drove themselves were able to leave school early. Isabel B said, “Taking an alternate route added about ten minutes to my normal time of getting home.”
Due to the fire, buses also had to take different routes which pushed back pick up time for both schools. Staff that work at the school also had to take alternate routes. Lisa B quoted, “Our biggest concern was reduced visibility due to dirt that is kicked up as well as narrower gravel roads.” She states, “ We didn’t want our students meeting the buses on the roads. The early dismissal allowed students to leave while the buses were at the elementary.”
