The world of Spanish is growing! This obviously includes Conestoga’s Spanish Club. The club is only a couple years old, but has grown quite a bit in many ways. This year, Meastra Rebecca Spangler, is using new approaches on certain aspects of her club. There are about 30 eager high schoolers in the club this year.
Spangler is the Spanish teacher for Spanish one through four at Conestoga High School. Three years ago, she decided she wanted to give kids that are interested more information about the large Spanish world. The Spanish Club now meets about once every two weeks during Cougar Connections. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Spanish Club had their first meeting of the school year. They celebrated with some hot chocolate on that icy day!
Meetings typically have a focus on some aspect of culture from the Spanish speaking world. They do more immersion in Spanish than during class. If any students have more specific questions that they did not have time to ask in class, the club is a perfect opportunity to get your answer.
“I am excited to have a big group of students this year,” Spangler says. “I’m also excited about our first ever advisory board to help plan activities.”
This year, the club is hoping to participate in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln language fair in April. There, they will get to see other schools and see other processes of learning. They will have the opportunity to see a completely new perspective of the language. They will continue to learn in a judge-free environment throughout the 2025 school year.
