It’s getting colder outside. That means it’s basketball season! Winter sports started practicing on Nov 18, including girls basketball. This season, the Cougerettes have fourteen girls out, which is two more than last year. Varsity and JV had their first game on Dec 5 at Louisville. The team’s first home game was Dec 10 against Fort Calhoun. Both teams unfortunately came out losing.
JV had six girls suit up. Due to the lack of players, JV only played two quarters instead of all four. They were in the lead during the first quarter, but ended up losing. Varsity had ten girls. The score for half time was 11-30. The final score was 24-55. The leading scorer was Davida G with nine points.
“As a team, we need to continue to work towards protecting the ball and reducing turnovers,” coach Mark Skiles said. “
This year, there are two experienced seniors returning, Alyssa B and Divida G. The seniors are the team captains, along with the only junior Ayla G. There are six sophomores and five freshmen, making a young team this year. The three captains got to design the warm up jerseys and travel gear before the season started. This helped head coach Skiles and the other two coaches, Steve Vechio and Jill Jackson.
“Working with younger players is a joy because they are always coachable, and put forth maximum effort,” Skiles said. “I enjoy developing a plan for improvement of individual and team fundamentals. It is satisfying to see the team grow each day in numerous ways.”
The team is striving to have an amazing season this year. They are preparing everyday to get better. Even though they did not win their game, they are shooting for the next win!
