Murray, NEB- On the weekend of Feb. 16, the Conestoga cheer and dance team competed in the State Cheer and Dance Competition in Grand Island. Both teams competed in two routines: cheer in game day and non-tumbling, and dance in pom and hip hop.
The cheer team started their morning off at 4 a.m. on Friday, to get ready for the day. They left the hotel and arrived at the event center to stretch and do run-throughs. The Conestoga cheer team performed their first state routine, game day at 8:24 a.m. They finished runner-up out of 24 teams with a score of 87.35 with no deductions. Coach Summer Rieke said, “I think everything went super well with the team’s state performance. It can be hard to gauge what the judges are looking for with the routines but our team executed both really well and the finishes show that.”
Later in the day, Conestoga’s cheer team competed in non-tumbling at 1:12 p.m. They came in fourth place out of 11 teams with no deductions and had a score of 86.80. Coach Rieke quotes, “I am beyond proud of the team for so many reasons,” she said, “I am excited to continue to grow this team and to continue to learn new things and work hard. I have a lot of pride in this team and I am excited for more things to come!”
The dance team competed their pom routine to a 70s mix. The pom C1 category consisted of 21 teams from all over the state. Conestoga’s pom was the 13th routine of the day competing at 8:48 a.m. Coach Katherine Bloch said,” I think that the performance went well, the girls always step up their game for big performances and they do such a great job entertaining.” Out of 21 teams Conestoga came in at number 6 scoring 79.30 points.
Conestoga’s dance team competed in hip hop later in the afternoon. The team wore their white costumes and danced to a mix. The team placed first in their hip hop routine scoring 86.03 points out of 100. Coach Bloch exclaims, “They are a great group of girls who work incredibly hard, their dedication and work-ethic is what makes this team successful.”
