Carter Plowman’s hand is raised in victory following his championship finals match. Plowman (145) and Keaghon Chini (126) led the way for Conestoga with first place finishes.

MURRAY, NEB.–Wrestlers from across the state spent their Saturday on the wrestling mats at Conestoga’s feature wrestling event, the Cougar Classic.

Sixteen Conestoga wrestlers took part in the annual event. The home team placed third in the 11-team tournament with 117.5 points. Syracuse (188) and Bishop Neumann (162.5) finished first and second, respectively.

Eight Cougars walked off the mats with medals in hand. Keaghon Chini (132) and Carter Plowman (145) led the way for Conestoga with championship efforts. Cameron Williams (138) also made an appearance in the championship finals, finishing as runner-up. Asher Koehnen placed 2nd at 106 in a round robin bracket. Rounding out the medalists were Braden Ruffner (3rd at 126), Ethan Avidano (4th at 126), Scott Dufault (4th at 138) and Gage Totilas (4th at 220).

Williams won his 100th career match during the tournament.

Due to the global pandemic, the Classic looked a bit different this year. Each team was housed in classrooms with wrestlers waiting until their matches were called on deck to enter the competition gym. The stands also were much less crowded this year with each wrestler only permitted to invite on family member to the tournament.

Despite the new protocols in place, the tournament ran smoothly and all athletes were able to compete.
