Should the Philadelphia Eagles play the “Tush Push” be banned? The Eagles have implemented a new play these last 4 seasons called the “Tush Push” the first time they used it was week 5 in the 2021 NFL season against the Carolina Panthers. The success rate is around 86% for the Eagles but for other teams who have attempted it their success rate is only around 75%. The play was brought up by former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr. The play consists of a very compact offensive line, with the quarterback under center and three big players behind the quarterback pushing him forward for a small gain.
The first reason why people want it to be banned is because it is an unfair advantage. They think this because it is almost a guaranteed first down and it seems like the Eagles have perfected the formula for the play while other teams seem to struggle with it. The second reason is because it could cause more injuries. There is no evidence to support this claim whatsoever people just see the play and assume it can cause an injury because of all the bodies colliding and falling on top of eachother. The third reason relates to the first one, but people think it takes away from the actual game of football. Instead of a 4th and 1 being super exciting the Eagles found a way to almost guarantee a way of getting the first down, taking away the suspense and excitement of a 4th down play.
So finally, should the Eagles play the “Tush Push” be banned? Short answer is no. The Eagles found a play that works. Why would we take away a play that does not violate any rules? It’s not an illegal formation so why care? Somebody put a lot of thought into making this play and we are thinking of taking it away because it’s a good play? It just doesn’t make any sense. People shouldn’t get mad at a team for being good at it. It’s a fairly simple play if your team wants to be good at it they should practice it. It’s not like it’s some sort of magical spell only the Eagles can use. It’s just a play call that everyone can use. Sure it might be a boring play but it’s securing the Eagles wins and at the end of the day that’s all that matters. I just don’t see a use or a point of banning a play that is available to every team in the NFL to practice and use in a game.
