Conestoga's Track team recently placed third overall at the varsity track meet in Yutan on Tuesday, April 16. The weather was sunny and the temperatures were reaching 80 degrees all day. Coaches were impressed by the PR’s and overall performance of everyone.
Coaches like Tommy Sigler, a middle school teacher and distance coach, stated it was one of the hotter days. "The heat will zap ya," Sigler replied when asked what would affect the performances of the athletes.
The reason heat affects athletes in general is because they sit around in it, many students are out helping field events away from shade and in the sun. Without sunscreen and limited water, the performance is hindered for a lot of these students.
"I don't run the mile until the very end of the meet, I just sit here and wait," stated Corbin M, a distance runner.
The running events are one after another, and running events don't start until later in the day because of field events. Field events include shotput, discuss, high jump, triple jump, and long jump. The heat was constant throughout the day and only went down towards the end of the meet.
Many students from Conestoga also got sunburnt.
“The drive there was decently long and once we got there it was so hot, I forgot my sunscreen and got burnt a little on my neck,” Zach S shared.
Conestoga's track team placed third overall at this meet and had a few PR’s. The team is overall excited for next week's meet on Thursday.
