The Conestoga girls soccer team went up against Plattsmouth on Thursday, March 19. The game went on to a shootout over regular time and an overtime period. The Blue Devils won in the shootout 5-4.
The Cougars just kicked off their season with their first game against Plattsmouth. The Cougars fought hard throughout the whole game, evenly matched against the Blue Devils. In regular time the score was tied up 2-2. The two teams went into overtime and were still all tied up. During the shootout six Conestoga girls took a penalty kick: Scout N., Cayleigh T., Ella T., Lillian H., Piper G., and Mercy W.
“Something that was going through my mind was ‘I hope I don't mess this up’,” senior and captain of the soccer team, Mercy W., shares. “Unfortunately I did end up over shooting it. This just shows me that I need to take more time on these and practice them more often.”
The Cougars not only fought hard in their game, but they only had two subs. The girls team only had 13 girls go out this year, and with 11 girls on the field at all times that doesn’t leave very much extra room.
“The hardest challenge with having a small team is the lack of subs,” another one of the captains of the team, Ella T., states. “Soccer is a 90 minute game with a ten minute break in the middle, the field is also much bigger than other sports so it gets tiring not being able to be subbed out.”
Even though there aren’t many girls on the team, they’re still all trying their best. The team is doing things both in and out of practice to try and better themselves, and the team as a whole.
“I do believe that everyone is working their hardest, we have things we are all doing outside of practice to get touches on the ball and are also all in good shape to last as long as we can on the field,” Ella voiced.
The season has just begun for the Conestoga soccer team, and there are still many more opportunities to be able to get wins up on the board.
“I am extremely excited for the rest of the season, I can't wait to see the progress the team goes through this season, and being able to experience it with the girls,” says Mercy.
