Murray, NEB- Girls soccer officially kicked off their season with their first practice on Monday. Pre-season conditioning took place on the week of Feb. 23 to prepare them for their first practice.
Head coach, Anton Yost said he is looking forward to being prepared mentally and physically for the season, especially when it comes to competing against other teams. “We have a good mix of returners and younger athletes who seem eager to step in.” He quoted, “It should translate to meaningful matches.”
Yost is looking to improve a few things after last season. “Last year we were competitive in many matches but lacked in some, in which I want to have consistency.” He commented, “We need the ability to stay focused for the full 80 minutes.” Additionally, Yost spoke about staying disciplined defensively and being able to score in the final third. He added, “It’s the small details that will make a difference.”
Yost has set a few goals for the team as they head into the new season. “I would like to improve our record from last year.” He said, “Obviously, we need to reduce goals scored upon us and increase our scoring output…we just need more footskills to get open and take the open shots.” In order to stay successful, the team has to stay organized defensively, patient in their possession and relentless in their intensity.
Junior Ella T. is excited and prepared for the upcoming season. “I am very excited for soccer.” She added, “It is one of my favorite seasons and I am excited to play with the incoming freshman along with other people that decided to join this year.”
