Freshman Lexi L has started off the basketball season, quickly becoming a strong leader and guiding light for her teammates. Her competitive spirit is what drives her to make not only herself better, but also those around her.
Having a good attitude is key when you’re a part of a team. Lexi L works hard to ensure that her outlook on the game stays upbeat and positive even when it’s tough.
Head Coach Mark Skiles states, “Lexi is a positive influence in many ways. It starts with her positive attitude and strong work ethic.” Skiles voices how Lexi L uses her optimistic mindset to lift up her teammates, communicate on the court, and face problems head-on.
On top of having a positive attitude, Lexi L is a natural competitor. She is constantly working to improve and get better in all aspects of the game.
“Heading into the season, I have a growth mindset and a positive attitude,” says Lexi L. “I am always thinking of the skills that I can improve on.”
The time spent before a game can drastically affect the outcome, which is why Lexi L has small rituals that she participates in before every match to help herself get in the zone, prepare mentally, and grow in confidence.
“Before a big game I listen to music and try to focus on what I need to do and how we can beat the team we’re about to play,” notes Lexi L. “I try to focus on the controllables such as plays and effort and practice positive self talk.”
In addition to being positive and competitive, Lexi L is a leader on her team. She goes out of her way to help her teammates understand and excel in drills.
Skiles explains, “Lexi works hard to set a good example for her teammates, work with them, and support them on and off the court.”
“I don’t have to worry as a coach about motivating Lexi because it comes from inside of her,” quotes Skiles. “She has a fire inside her that makes her a great competitor.”
