Conestoga’s cross Power Lifting team had their first meet this Saturday, Jan. 17th The event was hosted at Gretna East High, with multiple students achieving personal records.
This was one of the most nerve wracking events yet, many beginners found it challenging to perform while focused. “First meet of the season and I’m already cookin’,” said Christian Z, first year powerlifter.
Powerlifting is such a unique sport in the fact that it’s an individual sport, however, the people on the team give so much advice and technique tips to newcomers so nobody gets injured. The team is constantly listening, responding and taking care of each other, which overall gives into a feel that its not just a sport about you but a sport about them.
“The team is so supportive of one another and constantly helps each other improve form,” stated head coach ReAnn Schreiner.
Overall the team has a positive outlook on the sport this year, with a deep appreciation for the coaches flexible practice hours. With the head coach encouraging anyone who is looking to workout right after school to join.
“This meet was one of our most impressive ones yet,” said Schreiner. “I’m really proud of all the work they put in so far.”
Many of the team members also won awards with Lydia T, receiving the best female lifter at the meet.
“We keep putting in the work,” Lydia shared, “This year is gonna be one of our best!”
The team’s first meet seemed to be an eye opener for a few, but also a great experience for all who came.”I loved it, this sport gives me such a rush!” remarked Ty T.
