Conestoga opened its district tournament Monday 16th night with a tough loss to Ashland-Greenwood, falling by just four points in a game that showed the Cougars’ determination and promise. From the start, the game was close, with both teams trading baskets and momentum, and it never felt out of reach.
Freshman varsity starter Emma R. said she left the court feeling positive, even in defeat. “I felt the game went really well even though we lost,” she said. “We all played well together and shared the ball. Everyone was hustling and excited during the game, which was very good.” That energy was clear early on, as Conestoga moved the ball smoothly and created open shots, keeping pressure on Ashland-Greenwood’s defense.
Rainey pointed to teamwork and passing as key strengths. “I think passing and sharing the ball was really done well,” she said. “We all played a big part in this game and worked as a team.” Their unselfish play helped the Cougars hold a slim lead for much of the first half.
The game shifted in the third quarter, when Conestoga struggled offensively and Ashland-Greenwood took advantage. “We struggled a bit during the third quarter not scoring much,” Rainey said. “They caught up to our lead, which didn’t end well. We just need to keep all four quarters good.”
Even though the comeback fell short, Conestoga showed resilience, strong teamwork, and real growth, signs that the Cougars have the potential to achieve more as they continue to develop.
