Winter+Sports+Preview

Murray, NEB-As the fall sports season comes to an end, winter sports are starting up at Conestoga. Winter sports consist of boys and girls basketball, and boys and girls wrestling.

The girls basketball season starts late November and ends around February. The girls team got quick to work with conditioning and practices at the beginning of November. The team is led by head coach Mark Skiles and assistant coach Abigal Plihal. Returning leaders include senior Dani A, juniors Alyssa B and Davida G and sophomore Ayla G. ”I believe that the girls basketball team has a lot of potential. The team has good athletes, hard work, and good attitudes,” Coach Skiles says. The team’s first time out will be Nov. 21 in a jamboree versus Nebraska City Lourdes. The first game is at home versus Louisville on Nov. 30. Coach Skiles says, “I am looking forward to working with the team and watching each girl develop both as a person and a player.”

Boy’s basketball started soon after the fall sports season ended. The team is coached by head coach Jason Ahrens and assistant coaches Nick Hegge, Jesse Swantek and Josh Schliefert. Last season the Conestoga Boys Basketball team ended with a winning season of 14-11. The team is preparing for their first test of the season versus Nebraska City Lourdes for their jamboree match and the first game versus Louisville on Nov. 30.

Both the boys and girls wrestling teams saw a successful season last year sending five wrestlers to state. Gage T, Carter P, Lucas A, Maggie F, and Kylee P all competed in the state tournament last February. The boys team is coached by head coach Nate Morris and assistants are Mike Kansteiner and Colby Laughlin. The girls team is led by head coach Rob Everett and is assisted by Mike Anderson. The girls team at Conestoga is seeing a flourish of interest going from a small number of wrestlers to a double digit amount of competitors. Both girls and boys wrestling will have their first home appearance at the Cougar Classic on Dec. 2.
