MURRAY, NEB- The Cougar wrestling season is fast approaching. Preseason conditioning started on Nov. 17. The team conditioned two times a day all week. One of those being in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The first meet of the season is the Cougar Classic. This is a girls and boys Conestoga invitational where multiple schools in the area compete. This is held in the gym on Saturday, Dec. 6.
Head coach, Rob Everett says this is his favorite time of the year. He explains, “…The Cougar Classic is a fantastic look at how the team is shaping up. It gives us some keys on what to work on but also what is working,” He states. “I am excited for the team this year because even though we have a smaller team, the caliber of wrestler is high.”
Everett has big plans for this season. He wants to help improve the team’s mental toughness. He quotes, “There were several matches last year that we were close to winning that we couldn’t push over the line,” He adds. “This year we are taking some new approaches to keeping the wrestling room more lighthearted and exciting. Keeping the team in good spirits and believing in themselves.”
A member of the wrestling team, Ava F. also states that she is looking forward to bonding with the team, even though it is smaller than it has been in previous years. She says having a small team can come with some challenges but it can also help build that family atmosphere.
