Murray, NEB- In a time where screens and technology are becoming more advanced, physical activity is becoming less and less of a priority. Some people might say that between school and work, there is no time for physical activity. However, staying physically active is not all about how you look, it’s about having a healthy and balanced life.
Physical activity can have a big impact on how you feel mentally and physically. It has been found to improve your sleep and different mental disorders. According to the National Institutes of Health, a study has shown that adults who get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, sleep on average 15 minutes longer than people who don’t. Additionally other studies have found that physical activity can help reduce sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and daytime sleepiness. Physical activity can also help improve your mental health. It has been found to reduce stress, depression and anxiety. According to NIH, exercise improves cognition and mood by regulating serotonin and dopamine, alleviating anxiety and depression.
On the other hand, physical activity improves bone and muscle strength. Physical activity and exercise reduces bone fragility and it slows down the natural loss of bone mass that occurs after 40 years old. Additionally, it boosts metabolism and helps deal with chronic conditions like arthritis and diabetes.
People often perceive working out as a task. Getting physical activity doesn’t always have to be at a gym. You can find something that you enjoy doing, such as biking, walking, swimming or yoga. You can turn something that you dread into something that you actually look forward to doing daily.
Ultimately, staying active is all about taking care of yourself. Even just going on a short walk outside can make a big difference. Adding physical activity into your life can make you feel better mentally and physically. Now, let's spare 10 minutes of scrolling to get up and be active.
