Upcoming Nebraska Primary Election on May 10th

Murray, NEB.- Residents of Cass County have three major elections coming up in 2022: the Nebraska statewide primary election on May 10, a special election for the 1st Congressional District on July 28 and the statewide general election on Nov. 8. The primary election is fast approaching with the race for school board and the school bond issue at the top of mind for Conestoga district residents.

Voters have eight candidates to choose from for the Conestoga Board of Education; they can vote for three and six will advance to the general election in November. Read more about the candidates here.

The bond proposal for Conestoga Schools is asking voters for $29.51 million to make renovations and additions to the district’s two buildings. Two previous elections, one in May 2020 and another in May 2021, failed to garner enough votes to approve a bond. In May 2020, 640 votes were cast against with 627 votes cast in favor. In May 2021, 906 votes were cast against with 851 votes cast in favor. With higher voter turnout, it appears more residents were opposed to issuing a bond.

May is also a primary election for nominees from the two major parties, Republicans and Democrats, as well as two other lesser known parties. For Congress in District 1, State Senator Patty Pansing Brooks and Jazari Kual Zakaria are competing for the Democratic Party’s nomination. Curtis D. Huffman, Thireena Yuki Connely, John Glen Weaver, and State Senator Mike Flood are competing for the Republican Party’s nomination. Jeff Fortenberry’s name will also appear on the Republican primary ballot although he resigned in March 2022 following felony convictions in federal court.

Due to Fortenberry’s resignation, a special election has been scheduled for July 28, 2022. State Senator Patty Pansing Brooks, a Democrat, and State Senator Mike Flood, a Republican, will appear on the ballot.

Voters also have statewide races including for the office of Governor of Nebraska, the race for Legislative District 2, and countywide races on the ballot in May and November. You can see all candidates for the 2022 elections in Cass County here.
