Murray, NEB- When walking down the hallways of Conestoga no student should be seen drinking out of a can. The no can policy at the high school has been in effect for two years.
The no can policy entails having no cans throughout the entire school besides in the commons when eating lunch.
According to principal Rob Geise, “There are a couple reasons for the policy. First of all, usually anything in a can is sticky and if it spills, it's harder for people to clean up. Usually anything in a can will ruin a computer or stain the carpet,” he quoted.
Geise did not speak on the specific consequences for violating the policy. He said the students would just be reminded of the rule. He explained that if he has to keep reminding the same kid, something might have to be done.
Some students in the school have disagreed with the no can policy. Junior Ella T. expressed, “I don’t like the policy because I get a canned drink from the gas station at least twice a week and I have to keep it in my locker.” She said, “People also have water bottles that spill just as easily as a can does.”
Plastic cups like Starbuck’s or Scooter’s are still allowed at school. Some may wonder how having a can is any different from bringing a Scooter’s coffee to school. “If the coffee falls on the ground it might be just as bad or worse,” Geise explained, “I don’t want to go as far as having to ban those too.”
