Journalism, mainly known for being an activity that writes news stories, offers students a variety of activities to choose from.
One of the main activities students in Journalism will learn is writing news for the school newspaper. Students may also work on some broadcast journalism; this is where students will share live information through video. Finally, there is the weekly wrap up video where students will share various information about the week. In Journalism II, students have the opportunity to learn photography, learn how to design and layout pages and can help with the creation of the school yearbook.
Journalism teacher Allison Dworak explained, “In Journalism we learn how to write for the school newspaper, do broadcast journalism, and produce weekly wrap up videos. Broadcast journalism is basically what you watch on TV where a person gives information via video rather than print.” Dworak also explained what students will do in Journalism II saying, “Students have the chance to take photography, learn page layout and design and create the school yearbook.”
In Journalism, students can write news stories about what is going on around the school but people can also write about feature stories to show off different activities or peers in the school. Journalism is mainly run by the students who create the writings for newspapers but Dworak also plays a big role in Journalism. Besides teaching the students the skills needed for writing newspapers, Dworak is like an editor who approves most of the writing topics. Journalism I student Isabel B. shared, “I mainly write stories in journalism about what’s going on around the school. I also write some feature stories to show off what different people or activities do.”
In Journalism II students will brainstorm and design the yearbook and sell it to classmates and families. Students will also learn how to use a Canon camera and will need to attend school activities to take photos. Just like Journalism I, this activity is mainly run by the students with Dworak being around to help brainstorm ideas for the yearbook. Journalism II student Raeann C. believes, “students who actually attend school events and love designing covers and pages, writing short stories, and taking pictures would be a great member of Journalism II.”
People who enjoy writing and improving their writing skills and also want to be more involved in school activities and making impacts could be a perfect fit for Journalism. Journalism is a great activity for people who are creative and want to express themselves and school spirit. Isabel B. recommends Journalism to “anyone who likes writing or is looking to improve their writing,” and believes it’s a “fun way to express yourself and you can be really creative in the class to create things that fit you.”
