Joining the Color Guard this year, Safron G discovered a new passion for flag routines, teamwork, and performing under pressure.
As a freshman at Conestoga Jr/Sr High School, Safron had never tried flag before, but she jumped into the band’s Color Guard with excitement. “I wanted to join the Color Guard/flag group because it sounded very fun, and it was!” she expressed. “I’ve never done it before until this year, and I’ve learned so much about technique and confidence.”
Her favorite moment so far? Performing “Wanted Dead or Alive” at football games. “Yes! My favorite routine is ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’, which was performed at the football games a few times,” Safron G. shared.
Staying in sync with the band isn’t always easy, though. “It is very hard to stay in sync with the other flags and the band, because if the band starts going fast, you can mess up your routine” Safron explained. “By doing this, the rest of the flag will follow and it can all become a mess.”
Despite the challenges, Safron G. pushes through the nerves before each show. “Every time before a performance, I’d get anxious and worried. But once I was performing, the stress went away and it’s all about having fun!”
And while the work can be tough, she’s proud of how far she’s come. “It can be hard for some people, but with time, it gets easier. I struggled with certain techniques and routines at first, but with practice and discipline, it got so much easier!”
From first-time jitters to favorite routines, Safron G.’s journey with the flag team shows how trying something new can lead to growth, and a lot of fun.
