State SkillsUSA took place in Grand Island from April 9 to April 11. In this event a variety of activities and events take place such as building a shed as a team, firefighting, and even information technology services. For some activities, like anything related to woodworking, you need to have taken or be taking a class related to that topic or just have experience on the topic. Some of the events do need to be done as a team while other events, like cabinetmaking or even metrics, can be all by yourself. State SkillsUSA started off with the opening ceremony to start kick things off for events.
The competitions that Conestoga competed in were Chapter Display, Teamwork, Cabinetmaking, Baking and Pastry Arts, Automotive Maintenance, Welding, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Mouse Trap Vehicle Speed and Distance. All competitors did very well with their respective competitions, especially the few individuals doing SkillsUSA for the first time.
Cabinetmaking is about making a cabinet within the amount of time you have been given. Baking and Pastry Arts is about baking things like cookies, biscuits, and even a cake, that judges taste test to determine a winner. Automotive Maintenance is about checking on cars and seeing the issue with the car and creating a report about it. Teamwork is about making a shed within eight hours with the tools the team has brought to the competition. Chapter Display is about making a display about the chapter and what it represents; it should be on the current SkillsUSA theme. Welding is about reading blueprints, safety, and proficiency in SNAW and cutting operations.
In Extemporaneous Speaking competitors are given a topic and have to make a three to five minute speech on that topic. Mouse Trap Vehicles the speed competition is about having the fastest car. The competition is in a double elimination bracket meaning you need to lose twice in order to be out of the competition. The distance competition is about making the car go the farthest within the area.
At the closing ceremony the top three competitors or teams were announced. The Chapter Display team got second place in the state competition, and the Teamworks team finished first place in the competition. This means that the Teamworks team qualified for the nationals competition in June.
