Students in the school’s mock trial program say the experience is helping them build confidence and learn to stay calm under pressure.
Freshman witness, Lorelai F said the team’s practices have helped her manage nerves when performing in front of an audience.
“Yes, I get nervous before performing but I just try to remember everything I have learned at practice and it puts my mind at ease knowing I know my part,” Lorelai said.
The team meets several times a week to prepare for competitions where students take on roles such as attorneys, witnesses, and timekeepers. Many members say the environment is supportive and helps them improve their public speaking skills for the future.
Freshman attorney Lillian H said the program has changed the way she approaches speaking in front of others.
“I feel like I have gained the ability to publicly speak without feeling nauseous,” Lillian said. “I also feel like it gave me the ability to think on my feet on the spot and adapt to problems.”
Coach Hegge says they hope the program continues to grow and encourages students who are interested in law, debate, or acting to join. For many members, the team is not just about winning competitions, but about learning skills they can use beyond high school.
