The homecoming dance is a popular tradition in many high schools, colleges, and churches in the United States and Canada. Conestoga’s 2024 homecoming dance falls on Saturday Oct. 19. All students in grades 9-12 ,that are applying themselves to the good standing policy, get the privilege to attend the dance.
The good standing policy is a new policy for Conestoga. This includes passing all classes, good behavior, paid fines, and no tardies or absences. The Building Leadership Team at the Jr/Sr high voted on the idea. It was brought to the attention of the team that many schools already had something similar in place and the results have been successful. Conestoga used these plans from other schools. The idea from those schools, as well as the leadership team, is that students need to be in good standing in order to attend those events that are considered privileges, like the homecoming dance.
“With the overall result being within every student’s control,” Principal Rob Geise said. “ The hope is that it has little to no impact on attendance at the dance.”
The community pep rally that is introducing homecoming week is on Saturday, Oct. 13. There, students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to participate in the 2024 powder puff games. There are 10 girls chosen in each grade to play flag football. The freshmen will be playing against the juniors. The sophomores will be playing the seniors. The football players will represent the cheerleaders and dancers to cheer the girls on to victory. The boys will learn a cheer and dance. At the end of the games, the homecoming court will be announced.
Homecoming week is Oct. 15-18. The dancers and cheerleaders came up with the spirit day outfits for each day. Tuesday is USA theme. Wednesday is denim v.s. diamonds. Thursday is cowboys v.s. surfers. Friday is cougar spirit. The theme of homecoming itself is tropical paradise.
“The dancers and cheerleaders got together in the summer and came up with the theme for homecoming,” said Piper I. “Everyone brainstormed ideas for spirit day outfits and then voted on their favorite ideas. I am most excited for USA day!”
“I am excited to hang out with all my friends at the dance,” Scout N. says. “I know it will be an amazing night and one to remember!”
