Murray, NEB- National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students for their character, leadership, service and scholarship.
Students must be involved in different activities and clubs to be inducted into the National Honor Society. They also need to demonstrate various leadership qualities inside the classroom and in extracurricular activities.
Applications are sent out in January. Any sophomore, junior or senior with a GPA of 3.5 or above is eligible to apply. If students get into the Nation Honor Society, an induction ceremony takes place at the high school with the current members.
Each member needs to obtain 15 hours of community service per year. Students must fill out a paper for each act of community service and get a signature from a supervisor as evidence of completion. The National Honor Society also sponsors the junior high dance.
National Honor Society sponsor, Rebecca Spangler, says that students take on a lot of service hours. “From moving furniture for teachers during construction to working concession stands, they are visible around the school and community as positive leaders representing Conestoga.” Spangler explains, “They are also held to a high standard of character inside and outside of the classroom.”
Current member of National Honor Society, Hadley G. expresses, “There are various activities and events you can volunteer for to make up the mandatory hours.” Hadley G. adds, “I have volunteered at the food bank, church, golf tournament fundraisers and youth sport camps.”
National Honor Society members also get the opportunity to go to the elementary school for lunch buddies once a month. The National Honor Society also sponsors the junior high dance.
Hadley G. remarks, “National Honor Society has given me countless opportunities to give back to the community and become a better leader.”
