Conestoga cheer tryouts were held on March 31, bringing together 22 talented athletes eager to earn a spot on the team. The tryout process was both exciting, requiring participants to showcase their skills through a series of performances. Each athlete had to execute a crowd cheer, a wrestling cheer, and a dance routine, demonstrating their ability to lead a crowd and bring energy to a performance. In addition to group performances, the girls also had to showcase their individual abilities, including jumps and other technical skills. They had five days to learn everything. Their performances were judged by experienced cheerleaders from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), who carefully evaluated each competitor based on their technique, energy, and overall execution.
Last season, the Conestoga cheer team had 14 members, but four of them, Kyler Z, Elliot Z, Callie T, and Gabby T, were seniors and are now moving on to new adventures after graduation. With their departure, the team faced the challenge of filling those spots while maintaining a strong group. The remaining team members, along with new additions, are ready to step up and continue the legacy of Conestoga cheerleading.
For the upcoming season, the team will be led by four seniors: Layla B, Rachael U, Miley C, and Mercy W. Their leadership will be crucial in guiding the younger athletes and maintaining the team’s spirit. The junior class is well-represented, featuring Grace R, Rhiannon J, Hadley G, Sophia T, Izzy B, and Ava F. The sophomore class includes Presley R, Delaney H, and Mazi A, who are looking to grow in their skills and contributions. Additionally, the team is welcoming two incoming freshmen, Mackenzie S and Sydney W, who will bring fresh energy and excitement as they begin their high school cheer careers.
In total, 10 athletes from last year’s squad are returning, providing a solid foundation of experience and teamwork. With the addition of five new members, the team has grown to 15 members for the upcoming season. This mix of seasoned veterans and new talent should make for an exciting year as they prepare for games, competitions, and school events.
With tryouts now behind them, the team can shift their focus to training and building the chemistry needed to put on great performances. Their first big team activity will be in late June at the UNL Cheer Camp. Whether cheering on the sidelines or competing at events, the Conestoga cheerleaders are sure to bring school spirit and energy wherever they go. As they step into the new season, they’ll be looking to uphold the strong traditions of their program while continuing to grow as athletes and leaders.
